Description

Black Cat Chocolate Cupcakes are moist, rich, and decorated with playful candy faces to look like mischievous Halloween cats. They’re the perfect blend of spooky charm and chocolatey indulgence for parties, school events, or family baking nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup hot water or brewed coffee
  • 2 cups chocolate frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • Chocolate wafer cookies or Oreos (for ears)
  • Candy-coated chocolates or jellybeans (for eyes)
  • Mini chocolate chips (for pupils)
  • Licorice strings or pretzel sticks (for whiskers)
  • Pink candy melts or sprinkles (for noses)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with black or orange liners.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. In another bowl, combine oil, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry, then stir in hot water or coffee for depth of flavor.
  5. Fill cupcake liners about ⅔ full and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool cupcakes completely before decorating.
  7. Frost each cupcake with chocolate frosting for the “fur.”
  8. Place chocolate wafer halves at the top for ears.
  9. Add candy-coated chocolates or jellybeans for eyes and press mini chocolate chips into the centers as pupils.
  10. Use pink candy melts for noses and arrange licorice strings or pretzel sticks for whiskers.

Notes

For a more textured look, pipe frosting with a star tip to mimic fluffy fur. Add black sanding sugar or edible glitter for sparkle. Bake cupcakes a day ahead, store unfrosted, and decorate on the day of serving for best results.
